Learning Support Co-ordinator (SENCO) - South Central

Milton Keynes College are working in partnership with ten HM Prisons across South Central providing education to offenders as part of the offender learning and skills service. We are currently recruiting for a Regional Learner Support Co-ordinator – SENCO to join our regional team.


This is a brand new vacancy, based in South Central, working across the ten prisons that make up this region. The successful candidate will be supporting, inspiring and motivating our current learning support staff to meet the needs of our learners.


As a member of our South Central Regional Team you will ensure that a quality learner support provision is innovative for the learners, and creates a stimulating environment that will support learning and achievement.


Your main function will be to;


* Inspire and challenge ALS staff to create a dynamic culture of learning support within the teaching and learning environment.
* Coordinate the ALS provision and teams across the region to raise standards through the rigorous implementation of quality learning support, including target setting and continuous performance management of the ALS provision.
* Develop clear, effective and enterprising training to ALS teams and the teaching teams that covers the SEND agenda and give guidance on strategies to meet the needs of the learners.
* Conduct site visits each month to monitor the provision and communicate the content of these visits to the Head of Cluster responsible for ALS
* Understand the value in specialist assessments for access arrangement in exams; including guidance and advice to the teaching team on the JCQ guidelines.
* Undertake learning walks in each establishment to support the ALS within the classroom and monitor its impact on English and Maths.


Location: Regional, covering prisons in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and the Isle of Wight


Hours: 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

As a successful candidate you will have the following skills and proven experience:


  • Degree or equivalent qualification Special Education needs

  • Minimum Teaching qualification, DTTLS, Cert Ed, QTS

  • Level 2 English & Mathematics or above

  • Evidence of providing high quality effective learning experiences

  • Leading and developing training and support initiatives on ALS issues

  • Evidence of working with learners who have special education needs

  • Proven track record of quality improvement with evidence of raising standards with ALS

  • Knowledge of current relevant initiatives within ALS/SEND Agenda and offender learning curriculum

  •  Cultivate an aspirational culture in which the ALS team and learners can thrive and grow

  • Strong motivation to lead on new initiative within ALS

  • Have thinking ability to identify and support ALS team to enable them to plan, communicate and problem solve effectively around ALS strategies and targets

  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

  • Self-managing/reflective
